Health care workers are in short supply across the country right now after 18 months of a pandemic. Many have left the industry, and many more are feeling the burnout after so long battling the virus.
The same is true of home health workers and caregivers, who care for the elderly or those with disabilities and who are feeling the stress of the ongoing pandemic as it drags into its second year.
For Courtney Burnett, being a home health aide is not only her job — it’s her life.
Burnett is a speech therapist assistant in home health care professionally, as well as the mother and caregiver to her daughter, Hannah.
Because of a pandemic measure, she’s now paid for her caregiving work for her daughter, but she said the work is often difficult and unrecognized. And throughout the pandemic, there’s been a layer of fear added to the mix as Hannah remains especially vulnerable to COVID-19.
The Show spoke with her to learn how everything in their world turned upside down when the pandemic hit back in the spring of 2020.
