Tempe Opens First Mobile Cooling Center

Tempe has a new way to try to help keep its residents cool.

Last week, the city unveiled a mobile cooling center called Jenny’s Trailer. It’s named for Jenny Norton, an advocate for people experiencing homelessness, who donated $15,000 to buy the trailer.

The city says it, along with a new extreme heat relief center at a Tempe church announced this week, will be a way for people with no place else to go to cool down a bit and hydrate during the summer heat. But officials also say it’ll be more than that.

Paul Bentley is Tempe’s deputy human services director. The Show spoke with him to learn about the project and its goal.
