It’s been more than two months since 10 men went missing from a Yaqui town in neighboring Sonora, Mexico. Now officials believe they may have found some of their remains.
This week, Sonoran officials discovered six human remains near Yaqui territory in southern Sonora. They are suspected of belonging to some of the men who disappeared near Loma de Bacum on July 14, seven of whom are Yaqui, and three others who are close to the community.
DNA testing is still underway, but Sonora State Attorney General Claudia Contreras said during a press conference Wednesday night that family of the missing men have identified items recovered from the scene.
She said articles of clothing, belt buckles and a bracelet made of red thread were among the items recovered from the bodies.
Preliminary testing should wrap up this weekend, and Contreras said she hopes to have news to share about the situation next week.
There have been multiple disappearances and murders in the Yaqui community in recent months. Officials say they believe drug cartels are responsible. Some in the community, however, say they also suspect government and corporations interested in Yaqui land and resources.
