The federal government is recommending a third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine for some Americans if they’re more than six months past their initial doses. The Arizona Department of Health Services says the state has plenty of doses of the Pfizer vaccine to accommodate Arizonans seeking booster shots.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday recommended a third dose for those 65 and older, nursing home residents, adults over 50 with certain underlying medical issues, and some workers in high-exposure jobs. The recommendations apply to those who received a two-dose series of the Pfizer vaccine. Booster recommendations for those vaccinated with the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccines are still pending.
Arizona’s health department says hundreds of healthcare providers and pharmacies in the state have the Pfizer vaccine on-hand. Vaccine providers in Arizona are listed at azdhs.gov/FindVaccine.
The state health department says its primary goal is still to encourage more unvaccinated Arizonans to get their first doses. About 40% of Arizonans have not received a COVID-19 vaccine.
