Why Most Phone Companies Still Aren't Ready To Stop Spam Calls

Most of us have gotten calls telling us that a non-existent auto warranty is about to expire, and we have to take care of it immediately. Or that the IRS is coming for us over a problem with our taxes, unless we press 1 to talk to someone right away.

Those kinds of robocalls should be on the decline, and Sept. 28 marks a deadline in that effort: It’s the day by which many U.S. phone companies need to take steps to crack down on robocalls.

But a new report from the Arizona PIRG Education Fund finds that most providers have not yet installed the caller ID systems needed to stop illegal robocalls.

The Show spoke about this with Teresa Murray, the consumer watchdog with Arizona PIRG Education Fund, and author of the report, titled, "Make the Ringing Stop: The FCC is Finally Fighting Back Against Robocalls."
