Sonora added more than 13,000 formal jobs last month, bringing the current state total to roughly 640,000.
That’s the largest month-to-month increase in the state since pandemic restrictions first went into effect in March 2020. And it’s also one of the largest jumps since 1997, the earliest year included in publicly available federal jobs data.
The 2% monthly increase was more than twice the nationwide figure for the same period.
The jobs growth comes as COVID-19 cases and deaths continue their steady decline from the peak of the third wave in the state. The data do not include informal jobs, which account for a sizable portion of the workforce in Sonora and across Mexico.
