In new polling out this week in Mexico, insecurity fears in a major Sonoran city were among the highest in the country. The alarm comes as violent crime continues to rise in the region.
Nearly 93% of people who live in Ciudad Obregon, in the southern Sonoran municipality of Cajeme, think their city is unsafe.
That’s the second-highest level of perceived insecurity in Mexico, according to a new survey conducted by Mexico’s national statistics and geography institute, known as INEGI, in September.
Skyrocketing levels of homicide in Cajeme have put it among the most violent citiesin the country and have contributed to record-breaking murder rates in Sonora in recent years.
Ciudad Obregon is among 75 cities included in the survey, which showed that about 65% of people nationwide consider their communities unsafe. They cite ATMs, banks and public transportation among the places they feel most insecure.
