Arizona may redirect some rent-relief dollars to metro Phoenix and Tucson

Arizona could soon be sending some rent relief funds to urban areas.

In an effort not to lose federal dollars, the state is transferring some rental relief money that was designated to rural areas, to urban areas instead.

The Arizona Department of Economic Security is developing a plan to send more federal funds to metro Phoenix and Tucson.

Those two cities have spent much of their own federal relief to help renters and landlords.

DES spokesperson Tasya Peterson says the state was given $315 million to help rural areas, but it knew that was more than would actually be needed.

Arizona has only spent 10% of its federal funding in rent relief. It was supposed to triple the amount spent by Sept. 30.

The state has until Nov. 15 to send a new plan to spend the money.
