Tucson Mayor Regina Romero is not happy with proposed districts

Tucson Mayor Regina Romero says the new redistricting plan for the city is unfair and potentially illegal.

In a letter on Tuesday, she wrote to the Independent Redistricting Commission that while a new plan is necessary, she is unhappy with the proposal.

She wrote that the problem was a proposed line that would run north and south and split the University of Arizona and the Fourth Avenue restaurant and retail district from the city's downtown.

She also mentioned the Sun Link Streetcar that connects to places like the university and Banner Health runs through Fourth Avenue, separating it from the downtown.

About 100,000 people live and work within half a mile of the streetcar.

Then she cites a problem with the 7th Congressional District. She says adding non-Latino voters to the district will dilute the voting strength of the Latino community. That could potentially be against the federal Voting Rights Act.
