Vaccinations for some children began this week in neighboring Sonora, Mexico. The inoculations are only available for those with certain health conditions.
Children ages 12 to 17 with risk factors for COVID-19 started receiving first doses of the Pfizer vaccine in the Sonoran capital Hermosillo Tuesday.
Hundreds of doses were given to children with chronic lung, kidney, liver or stomach problems, autoimmune diseases, blood disorders and other health conditions.
Vaccinations for children with comorbidities are also set to start this week in five municipalities in southern Sonora.
However, Mexican leaders continue to insist that widespread vaccination for children must wait until all adults have received shots.
Officials say 75% of adultsin Sonora are now fully vaccinated.
