How COVID-19 shutdowns impacted the world's economy

When the COVID-19 pandemic began early in 2020, it sent shock waves through families, schools and communities as there were so many unknowns about the virus and how it could affect society.

As part of that, the world economy was pummeled by an overnight recession like no one had ever witnessed before. We’ve seen significant recovery, but uncertainties remain — depending upon what other variants could emerge.

Adam Tooze, a professor at Columbia University, has written a new book that explores the economic effects of the pandemic. It’s titled "Shutdown: How Covid Shook the World’s Economy."

The Show spoke with Tooze to learn just how much things changed during the pandemic.
