Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission gives preliminary approval on maps

The Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission gave preliminary approval to a map despite concerns from Democrats.

The tentative map gives Republicans an edge in the Legislature due to the creation of a new district.

The new district in Pima County is designed to help get Republicans to the House and Senate. That was after independent Erika Neuberg says she sided with the two Republicans to give “right-of-center” Tucson residents a chance to elect someone representing their views.

In doing so they rejected Shereen Lerner’s proposal to make a legislative district with a mostly evenly split population of Republicans and Democrats.

But the final word is not set. Commissioners expect changes to come after the map goes out for public comment in the next 30 days.

They will reconvene in early December.
