Concerns raised as ADEQ requests authority on coal ash cleanup from feds

Stronger environmental regulations have been put into effect in the first year of the Biden administration, and more are expected to follow.

In Arizona, that could affect how the cleanup of toxic coal ash from the state’s four operating coal plants would be handled.

A recent report by the Arizona Republic shows a budget request by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality that would lead to the agency managing the coal ash program — rather than relying on federal officials for that. Currently, only three states are in charge of their own coal ash waste enforcement.

Stacey Barchenger of the Republic wrote about the budget request, and The Show spoke with her to learn about her findings.
