New mortality datashows that neighboring Sonora was among the hardest hit by the pandemic in 2020.
At 21 deaths for every 10,000 residents, Sonora was tied with Baja California and Mexico state for the unenviable second-highest rate of death from COVID-19 in 2020. Only Mexico City was higher at 32. That’s according to recently released finalized data from INEGI, the national statistics and geography institute.
Sonora was also one of seven states where COVID-19 was the overall leading cause of death, as well as the leading cause of death for both men and women.
In 2020, more than 6,200 people died of COVID-19 in Sonora. More recent excess mortality datashow more than 14,000 excess deaths through early October, more than 10,000 of which were associated with COVID-19.
