Arizona nonprofit using virtual reality to bring some students to the arts

An Arizona nonprofit is bringing the arts to economically disadvantaged students in a new, immersive way.

Act One, which provides field trips to students in Title I schools, has created a virtual reality field trip, allowing students to travel pretty much anywhere from their classroom.

This first season deals with freedom of expression and includes stories of public mural makers in Chicago, a look at Diego Rivera’s mural rooms at the Detroit Institute of Arts and a mariachi performance from Tucson. The group is already talking about what stories it wants to tell in season two.

Beth Maloney is Act One’s arts education director, and The Show spoke with her to learn if this was this something she was looking to do before COVID-19 hit or if it was more of a pandemic pivot.
