U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego took part in a virtual Veterans Day event held by the newsletter Axios Latino.
Gallego is an infantry veteran. He survived combat in the Iraq War and credits “sheer luck” for having escaped death at least 11 times.
Gallego said the outcome in battle doesn’t make sense to the soldiers fighting them.
“A lot of times you can do everything right and you will still die. You can do everything wrong and still live. And that’s just the chaos of war,” he said.
Gallego said he joined the Marine Corps Reserve after he was kicked out of Harvard.
Now an alumnus of the Ivy League university, Gallego is also a member of the House Armed Services Committee in Congress.
