Off-duty MCSO lieutenant fatally struck in Scottsdale

A lieutenant with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office was killed by a vehicle in Scottsdale on Wednesday.

It was the second death for the agency in a month.

Sheriff’s Lt. Chad Brackman died at the hospital after he was hit by a vehicle while working off-duty traffic control on 87th Street and McDowell Road.

Brackman worked in the Lake Patrol division and spent 22 years with the Sheriff’s office.

His death is under investigation by Scottsdale police. They say the driver who struck Brackman is also hospitalized and has a police chaperone.

Brackman died 31 days after Maricopa County Sheriff’s Deputy Juan “Johnny” Ruiz.

He was attacked by a suspect he was taking into a holding cell in the West Valley. Ruiz had been with the Sheriff’s Office for three years.
