Mohave County is looking for a medical examiner

Mohave County could be without a medical examiner if it doesn’t find a new one before the end of November. The current medical examiner’s contract is ending, and only one application has been submitted.

Without a medical examiner, the county would have to contract with another county for those services. Mohave County has struggled to find a medical examiner due to its rural location. Sam Elters is the county manager and he says this isn’t the first time this situation has arisen.

“Couple of months ago, the current provider, Dr. Mosely, who is a qualified pathologist, was certainly burnt out, needed a break. We made arrangements with Coconino County to provide the autopsy services," said Elters.

Elters says the county did not exceed the limit of autopsies that Coconino County agreed to perform. But, he says, future quotas could be threatened  due to the unpredictability of death rates.
