Social media influencers are now a multibillion-dollar industry. These often photogenic folks make money posting about products on their Instagram or other social media accounts — and in the lucrative world of new motherhood, they can be especially influential.
Everything from toddler activity ideas to sleep training guides and parenting tips has been monetized these days, and social media “mom-fluencers” are making a killing selling them.
But Astrid Galván noticed something about the world of mom influencers: They’re overwhelmingly white.
Galván is an Associated Press reporter who reports that that monolithic face leaves out a whole range of mothers of color — who often struggle to find parenting advice and products that are relevant to them.
The Show spoke with Galván to learn about her findings, beginning with her own experience, which led her to this story. She is a mom of young kids, as well as a woman of color, and she said it’s been on her mind for some time.
