This week, Mexico said it’s opening up vaccinations for some minors. But the country is also working to finish vaccinating adults. In neighboring Sonora, officials plan to open some permanent vaccination sites.
So far, vaccinations in Sonora, and across Mexico, have been carried out at vaccination events, which generally last several days and are meant to serve a particular age group.
But now that all adults over 18 have at least officially had a chance to get a shot, Sonoran authorities are hoping to get doses to those who are still unvaccinated at fixed vaccination centers.
On Thursday, Sonora’s Health Secretary José Luis Alomía Zegarra said the state will need federal approval to open the ongoing vaccination sites, but hopes to offer the AstraZeneca vaccine because it is easier to transport and store.
Officials have not yet determined where the sites would be located.
