A judge in the District Court of Arizona dismissed Grand Canyon University’s lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education for receiving a lesser amount of COVID-19 relief funds than other universities.
A GCU spokesperson said in a statement that similar universities have received hundreds of millions of dollars in relief, while GCU has gotten less than $30 million. Because the Department of Education considers GCU a for-profit, it did not qualify for the same amount of Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds.
A judge ruled the institution does not qualify for nonprofit status and is not eligible for the larger amount.
The spokesperson said the difference in millions of dollars could have been used to support GCU students who faced pandemic-related hardships.
