The governor of neighboring Sonora hopes to bring solar energy plants to the state’s rural communities.
Speaking in his hometown Bavispe, Gov. Alfonso Durazo said those facilities could bring major benefits to the many remote communities in the state’s mountainous regions.
Estimates suggest that the plan could halve energy costs for such rural residents, according to Durazo. But building such facilities will also require bringing broadband internet to places that may not currently have reliable internet access. Construction of the rural solar plants is expected to begin next year.
Famously hot Sonora is considered to have extremely high potential for solar energy development.
