One of Sonora’s several groups dedicated to searching for the bodies of missing loved ones recently concluded a statewide effort.
Over nearly two weeks, the Madres Buscadoras de Sonora, or Sonoran Searching Mothers, crossed the state from south to north, conducting searches from Huatabampo all the way to the border in San Luis Rio Colorado.
“Many people are going to go home,” Ceci Patricia Flores, founder of the group, said of the searches and the closure they can bring. “People whose families perhaps haven’t even looked for them.”
She didn’t have an exact count, but estimated that some 30 clandestine gravesites were found, containing a significant number of human remains. The state attorney’s office is still processing one of the largest sites, between the capital Hermosillo and the beach town of Kino Bay, according to a spokesperson.
