Park Service to offer bounty for biggest brown trout at Lees Ferry

The National Park Service is offering a bounty for an invasive fish in order to save native fish in northern Arizona.

Researchers say the brown trout population at Lees Ferry has increased since 2014.

That stretch of the Colorado river has been managed as a rainbow trout fishery for decades.

But biologists believe that brown trout are more likely to feed on native fish, and so the Park Service is offering a bounty for them.

The angler who catches the biggest will get $500.

"The program creates an opportunity for people who are fly-fishing to keep brown trout that they catch, make some money, and most importantly, to help the

survival and recovery of the endangered fish in the Colorado River," said Taylor McKinnon of the Center for Biological Diversity.

The program will be offered through Jan. 31.
