Mexico to begin offering COVID-19 booster shots to older adults

After previously opposing coronavirus booster shots, Mexican officials said last week that they will begin administering third doses to people over 60.

Teachers, who were mostly vaccinated with the CanSino shot in the spring, will also be able to get another dose.

"I think it will be this month," President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said of when boosters would start, adding that he would like to see people's vaccines reinforced before temperatures drop and people gather for the holidays.

However, he said the additional doses will have to be balanced with ongoing efforts to get shots to unvaccinated adults as well as youth ages 15-17 who recently became eligible for vaccination.

About half of the country is fully vaccinated.
