Scottsdale lawmaker Sen. Michelle Ugenti-Rita is proposing to change the way people run for local school boards. The proposal would make candidates run with their parties in primaries before facing off in a general election.
While she says it will help voters understand the political positions of who they elect, Tucson Unified School District Board member Adelita Grijalva disagrees.
“We can disagree on specific issues. But making whether we're going to try to keep our children safe a political position has been incredibly frustrating. This has just been another way to create more partisanship in our pretty fractured community," she said.
Grijalva added that her record would be easy to find including her bid as a Democrat for the Pima County Board of Supervisors. Grijalva says that’s irrelevant to her position on the board.
