Study: Though challenges remain, Sonoran Attorney’s Office performs well nationally

Compared to other Mexican state prosecutors, neighboring Sonora’s is performing relatively well, according to a new study.

Among the 32 state Attorney’s Offices in Mexico, Sonora ranks fifth in overall performance, according to a new  reportfrom Impunidad Cero, a Mexican criminal justice group that works to reduce widespread impunity in the country.

The ranking is based on eight indicators, like the number of state attorneys for every 100,000 residents, trust in criminal investigators, effectiveness in resolving crimes and effectiveness in carrying out arrest warrants. On the latter measure, Sonora had the second-highest rate in the country and improved dramatically in 2020 over recent years.

But over 80% of murders go unresolved in Sonora, which, while better than two thirds of other states, remains troublingly high.
