Guided by a new six-year development plan, the governor of neighboring Sonora hopes to end extreme poverty in the state and jump-start the economy, among many other things.
The nearly 200-page document charts out a number of ambitious goals, which also include guaranteeing universal health care access, a rethinking of security policy, improving public transportation in major cities and major investment in tourist infrastructure.
“May this plan authentically serve as a guide for work,” Gov. Alfonso Durazo said while presenting the plan this week. “A route for the operation of state government.”
Among the most ambitious plans included is a series of associated projects to make the state a logistics hub for northwestern Mexico. They include previously promised improvements to the port in Guaymas but also major highway projects and land port improvements along the Arizona-Sonora border.
