A major construction project that will stretch nearly a full city block is now underway in downtown Mesa.
The former site of the Brown and Brown Chevrolet dealership will become the Mesa Arts District Lofts. The development will feature 335 housing units, along with 13,000 square feet of retail along Main Street.
During Tuesday’s groundbreaking ceremony, Mayor John Giles said the location along Main Street near the light rail line, Mesa Arts Center, Benedictine University and ASU’s Herberger Institute for Design and Arts is key.
“We’ve been setting the stage, we’ve been completing this puzzle for a long time and this is a very strategic piece that’s going to come in and really help us come close to finishing this part of downtown Mesa,” Giles said.
Opus Development plans five buildings of three, four and five stories. Housing options will include studios and lofts to three bedroom apartments and three bedroom townhomes. The project is designed to allow for future mid-rise housing buildings.
Giles described the area as a “shiny new old Mesa”, It’s still going to have its character, it's still going to be the most authentic downtown I know anywhere. It’s still going to have a character that is respectful to what this has always been, but it’s going to be an amazing place.”
The first residents of the Mesa Arts District Lofts are expected in May 2023 with the project fully completed by March 2024.
