Ride-shares, vans and public transit could be the new school buses

Schools across Arizona, and across the country, are trying to figure out better ways to get students to school.

The Tolleson Union High School District says it’s using a grant to start an Uber-like service. In Chandler, city officials plan to launch an on-demand passenger van service to help students; others are thinking about public transit and other options.

There are a pair of big challenges at work here: students going to schools outside their neighborhood districts, and a lack of bus drivers.

Matthew Ladner has been looking into these issues and recently wrote a paper on them. Ladner is director of the Arizona Center for Student Opportunity within the Arizona Charter Schools Association. He argues that school choice is not really a choice if it’s limited by your ability to get your student to school.

The Show spoke with Ladner to learn about his argument.
