Maricopa County supervisors appoint new representative for LD27

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors appointed Marcelino Quiñonez as the new representative for Legislative District 27.

The Democrat will represent a district that covers much of downtown Phoenix, as well as southwestern stretches of the city.

Quiñonez replaces former Rep. Diego Rodriguez, who resigned to focus on his campaign for attorney general. Quiñonez will serve the remainder of Rodriguez’s term through 2022.

He joins a wave of new faces at the state Capitol — there have been 12 vacancies to fill across the House and Senate this year. Two Senate seats were filled by appointing sitting representatives to those seats, but the remaining 10 House seats have been filled by new lawmakers, including Quiñonez.
