A new report finds that Mexico remains one of the world’s most dangerous places for reporters.
In its annual report on the dangers faced by journalists around the world, Reporters Without Borders registered 46 killed, the vast majority murdered or targeted for their work.
Seven of those were in Mexico, giving the country the dubious distinction of having the most reporters killed for three years running. The press freedom organization tallied 47 killed in the country over the last five years. Two of those killed this year were Sonoran reporters, and another two went missing in the state, the group noted.
Explaining the persistent dangers, the organization pointed to "near total impunity," as well as a lack of reforms up to the task of truly protecting members of the press.
