Among Mexican capitals, Hermosillo performs well in pandemic business creation

Compared with other Mexican capital cities, Hermosillo has performed relatively well in business creation during the pandemic.

For now four consecutive months, Hermosillo has ranked fifth in that metric among the country’s 32 state capitals. Since March 2020, when pandemic countermeasures first went into effect, Sonora was up 723 businesses, putting it behind only Monterrey, Queretaro, Culiacan and Chihuahua, according to analysis by the group Hermosillo ¿Cómo Vamos?

Jennifer Espinoza, a researcher with the organization, noted that Hermosillo had recently shown the second highest job recovery figures among capitals, but that in November the city fell to fourth place. Still, Hermosillo is up nearly 15,000 formal jobs since the pandemic started, according to Espinoza’s group.
