The military head of police in the Sonoran city of Guaymas has resigned in the wake of a deadly attack.
In his letterof resignation, Naval Cpt. Andrés Humberto Cano noted that authorities believe that he was the target of the armed attack in late November that cost three lives, including that of a young feminist activist. Cano says he doesn’t want others to be collateral damage of further attempts on his life. He was replaced by Eladio Amaya Muñíz, another Navy officer.
“It worries us a great deal that this line of militarizing public safety is continuing,” said Krimilda Bernal Hoyos, head of the Observatorio Sonora por la Seguridad, which monitors security policy in the state.
Her group has foundthat Sonoran cities that turned police forces over to military heads have seen violence worsen.
