New Arizona COVID-19 cases over 7,600 due to holiday lag

Arizona’s health department reported 7,641 new COVID-19 cases Monday. That’s the highest total since January.

The Arizona Department of Health Services said the high case count is due to reporting delays over the Christmas holiday. The department said daily case counts will likely be high for the next few days as the dashboard catches up.

On average, Arizona has been reporting about 3,000 cases per day recently, which is down slightly from early December. But experts  do expect cases to rise through January as the omicron variant of the virus gains dominance in Arizona.

Arizona State University’s Biodesign Institute reports more than half of COVID-19 samples it has tested in the past week appear to be caused by omicron.

Since the pandemic started, Arizona has seen 1,362,693 cases and 23,982 deaths from COVID-19.

As of Sunday, there were 2,327 patients with COVID-19 hospitalized statewide. Of those, 630 were in intensive care.
