Over the past year, Arizona has seen a number of developments on its scientific front, from new research to innovations. Here are KJZZ's top three science stories from the past year, all focusing on the continuing COVID-19 pandemic.

1. Here's when experts expect the omicron variant to take hold in Arizona

The end of November saw Arizonans gearing up for both the holiday season and a new variant of the coronavirus. KJZZ's The Show spoke with Dr. Joe Gerald at the University of Arizona to learn what to expect from the omicron variant.

KJZZ is proud to offer  Q&AZ, where listeners can submit questions about all things Arizona. Since the start of the pandemic, the station has received many questions relating to COVID-19. To answer those questions, KJZZ's Katherine Davis-Young has maintained a guide to help navigate vaccines, testing and more.

3. Arizona leads U.S. in rate of surging COVID-19 cases

Since the start of the pandemic, Arizona has risen and fallen in leading the nation in COVID-19 cases. In the beginning of November, the state once again led the U.S. in the number of positive COVID-19 cases.
