Chandler's Sunset Library still closed after being damaged in August explosion

Chandler officials don’t yet know when they can fully reopen the Sunset Library, which was damaged by a sudden explosion at a neighboring print shop in late August.

Southwest Gas Corporation later told state regulators a crack in a pipe that can deteriorate under certain conditions was found nearby.

A Chandler spokesperson could not give a final price tag for repairing damage to Sunset Library and its collection.

The city is relying on its insurance provider to pay the bill and to also decide whether to seek compensation from Southwest Gas.

A utility spokesperson did not answer if Chandler had asked Southwest Gas to pay to fix Sunset Library or if it agreed to do so.

Southwest Gas has a program to replace the type of vulnerable pipe found near the explosion.

The utility said in September the pipe had not drawn safety scrutiny because it was wrongly identified in the company’s mapping system.
