Storms and season-low temperatures make for rough driving in northern Arizona

Forecasters say a storm is expected to produce hazardous driving conditions across Arizona starting Thursday night and continuing into Saturday.

The National Weather Service reports snow is expected in higher elevations across northern and eastern Arizona, including Flagstaff. Areas of northern Arizona can expect 2-8 inches of snow, while eastern Arizona can expect up to 11 inches. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in lower elevations, and the weather service says road closures are possible.

The agency warns travel could be difficult as the most hazardous driving conditions are expected Friday afternoon and evening. The weather service says the state could face the coldest temperatures of the season so far for Saturday and Sunday mornings.

“Lower cloud levels, lower ceiling, can reduce visibility. So we are really emphasizing to the public to allow extra time for travel, to maintain good spacing between the vehicle in front of you and it only takes a little bit of snow to make those roads very slick," said Flagstaff National Weather Service meteorologist Jeremy Mazon

While temperatures will remain low up north, the service expects sunny skies Saturday after the storms.
