This year, big cellular carriers are going to phase out connectivity via 3G technology.
“Right now, 3G, 4G, 5G are all available to the devices that are out there. They’re going to phase out 3G just because there is so little traffic on it in comparison to the 4G and 5G," said Ken Colburn with Data Doctors.
5G is a cellular network that offer faster speeds and less lag time, among other features.
Colburn says if the signal in the upper right hand corner of the device consistently shows 3G, it will most likely have to be replaced. He says this is likely for phones more than seven years old.
AT&T will start shutting down the old technology in February 2022, and other carriers will follow. Colburn says by the end of 2022, 911 won’t be available on 3G.
