The Biden administration’s pick to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement will face another Senate hearing after his initial nomination stalled and expired in the Senate.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez of Harris County, Texas, was first tapped for the position last April.
He faced a hearing before the U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee a few months later and his confirmation vote was supposed to happen after that. But the legislative session ended before that happened.
Now, the process will start again.
ICE has not had a Senate-confirmed head in almost five years — even longer than the length of time its counterpart Customs and Border Protection was without a confirmed leader.
Former Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus was finally confirmed to that position at the end of last year.
