The state health department reported 7,749 new cases of COVID-19 Jan. 5 along with 61 more deaths.
Health officials are pointing to the highly contagious omicron variant as a reason for the sharp uptick in infections recently; the state is approaching 20,000 cases per 100,000 in population.
