The state health department reported 7,749 new cases of COVID-19 Jan. 5 along with 61 more deaths.

Health officials are pointing to the highly contagious omicron variant as a reason for the sharp uptick in infections recently; the state is approaching 20,000 cases per 100,000 in population.

To learn about the current situation, The Show spoke with Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine, medical director for disease control at Maricopa County Public Health.
