Reps. Biggs, Lesko among those seeking hearings on treatment of Jan. 6 suspects

U.S. Reps. Andy Biggs and Debbie Lesko of Arizona want congressional hearings on the treatment of those jailed in connection with the U.S. Capitol insurrection one year ago.

They’re among roughly 20 GOP lawmakers who signed a letter to top House Democrats demanding an investigation of conditions at the Washington, D.C., jail.

The jail where some Jan. 6 suspects are held is run by the city government for D.C.

Delayed wrist surgery for one of the accused led a federal judge last fall to hold the warden in contempt and order a civil rights investigation.

U.S. marshals inspected and found abusive conditions. This led to the transfer of hundreds of prisoners but not from the wing where Jan. 6 suspects are held.

Biggs and Lesko wrote there are many other mistreatment allegations that need Congress’ attention.

Biggs has denied being involved with the deadly riot by a pro-Trump mob that aimed to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
