Neighboring Sonora is starting its new year with an alarming jump in COVID-19 cases.
In the first full week of 2022, Sonora set several new, unsettling records: most cases confirmed in a single day — 762; most confirmed cases in a single week — more than 3,500; and the sharpest week-to-week case growth — nearly 200%.
Luis Armando Moreno, a data analystwho has been closely monitoring the Sonoran pandemic, attributed part of the record-setting rise to “excessive confidence” about potential risks during the holiday season.
“This jump, this very strong shock, in the increase in cases allowed us to realize that the risk for infection is high, and that we have to take measures to cut it, to be able to diminish this wave,” he said of the week’s eye-popping numbers.
As of yet, he said the surge is not evident in death and hospitalization data.
