Near the end of 2021, just a few days after Thanksgiving, the U.S. was again faced with a school shooting.

This one took place in Oxford, Michigan, and saw four students killed while another seven people were injured. Debates continue over how to prevent these tragic events, including putting more restrictions on gun ownership and making campuses more secure.

But from the mental and emotional standpoints, what can parents, teachers and counselors do after the fact to help students understand and better deal with the alarming outcomes?

Sarah Lindstrom Johnson is an associate professor in the School of Social and Family Dynamics at Arizona State University.

The Show spoke with her and began the conversation by asking her about what kind of toll it takes on students when they have to think about the possibility of a shooting at school.
