1,000+ Arizona school athletic events were canceled this week due to COVID-19

The Arizona Interscholastic Association reports that more than 1,000 school athletic events were canceled or postponed statewide this past week due to the recent spike in COVID-19 cases.

AIA spokesman Seth Polansky says schools will be selective about whether to reschedule, or cancel events outright.

“There will probably be a good mix of cancellations and reschedulings. I think you’ll see rescheduling more in the way of, either their region contests, or their contests that schools need to qualify for the postseason,” said Polansky.

Polansky says most of the cancellations are at the sub-varsity level, as schools are doing their best to keep varsity competition going under the AIA’s COVID-19 guidelines.
