AZ Legislature to hold hearings on bills regarding health care for transgender youth

The Arizona Legislature is holding a hearing Thursday on two bills that some worry limit the rights of those in the LGBTQ community.

One bill bans doctors from performing gender affirming health care on individuals under the age of 18. Another would require children to play on sports teams based on their biological sex.

Rep. Cesar Chavez is the chair of the LGBTQ caucus.

“This is an attack on human rights, we are criminalizing individuals for who they are. On top of that, we are criminalizing doctors and health care individuals that are doing their job," Chavez said.

Chavez worries about nearly 10 bills that have been introduced into the Legislature. One prevents educators from referring to a student by a pronoun other than what is on the student’s birth certificate.

Asaf Orr is senior staff attorney and Transgender Youth Project director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, and he joined The Show to discuss how Arizona is part of a national trend and how these kinds of bills affect the LGBTQ community.
