An Arizona Senate panel voted unanimously Wednesday to allow dentists to provide Botox treatments and dermal fillers for cosmetic purposes.
Dentists already apply Botox in some therapeutic cases, such as helping with muscles in the jaw to reduce the pain associated with temporomandibular joint disorder, known as TMJ.
That is according to John Macdonald, a lobbyist for the Arizona Dental Association.
"This bill would expand that a little bit to say that if the patient also wanted that Botox treatment for a cosmetic purpose in the same part of the body that the dentist would be allowed to administer that same Botox treatment for cosmetic purposes as well," Macdonald said.
Phoenix dentist Kevin Ortale says the procedures can be done by nurses, and many are already well trained. He also added the treatments would help him recover from the business he lost during the pandemic.
