Phil Boas: 'Hispanic districts' aren't a thing. Politicians need to engage Latino voters everywhere

The Show regularly checks in with the editorial board of the Arizona Republic to talk about current issues facing the state and the region — featured in columns on the newspaper’s op-ed pages.

Last week, the five-member Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission voted to approve legislative and congressional maps.

The new congressional lines may lead to the state's delegation moving from a 5-4 Democratic advantage to 6-3 for Republicans if election outcomes match voter registration numbers.

Two of the three districts favorable to Democrats would be highly influenced by Latino voters. In a column for the Republic, the president and CEO of the U.S. Hispanic Business Council, Javier Palomarez, argues that both major parties need to pay more attention to the influence of Latino voters overall, rather than simply put them into so-called "majority-minority" districts.

The Show spoke with Phil Boas of the Republic to learn about the column.
