A highway blockaded by striking mine workers was reopened late last week.
For nearly four days last week, members of the Miners Union’s 65th Section blocked the highway from Imuris in northern Sonora to the major mining city of Cananea.
On Friday, they lifted it, after being promised talks with federal officials about the union’s longstanding dispute with the mining giant Grupo Mexico.
After the blockade was called off, Sonoran Gov. Alfonso Durazo said that it would be through dialogue that the union’s demands are answered. That came after a meeting in Mexico City between top administration officials, including Labor Secretary Luisa Maria Alcalde, and union representatives.
