A bloody January for Mexican reporters spurs nationwide protests

Reporters across Mexico gatheredTuesday to protest a very bloody start to the year for the profession.

For years, Mexican reporters have faced some of the world’s highest rates of violence against journalists. But with three killed so far in January — two just in Tijuana — and a fourth seriously injured in a knife attack, media professionals organized numerous events in almost every corner of Mexico. They were protesting what Jan Albert Hootsen, the Committee to Protect Journalists’ representative in Mexico, called a vicious cycle of violence and impunity.

“The level of involvement by journalists all across the country this week is really something that I haven't seen before,” he said. “And I think it's a testament to the will of journalists to no longer accept what's happening."

It also points to their sense of solidarity, he added.
